Remember the Titans Essay Healthy relationships are made not born, and the movie â€Å"Remember the Titans† has proven that. A healthy relationship is a relationship which has respect, honesty, trust, communication, equality and acceptance for who the other person or people may be. On the other hand, an unhealthy relationship is a relationship which has selfish, abusive, irresponsible, aggressive and manipulative behavior. I will be discussing how the relationship of Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell transformed from an unhealthy relationship to a healthy relationship. As well as a theme from the movie that is equality. â€Å"Listen, I’m Gerry, you’re Julius. Let’s just get some particulars and get this over with,† Gerry said. â€Å"Particulars? Man, no matter what I tell you, you ain’t gonna know nothing about me. † Julius responded. Their relationship started off by not acknowledging one another, they were like enemies. They looked at each other with disgust and intimidation. They both lived their own separate lives with their own race and did not want to bond with the other race. If they did join with another race it was like a crime. But as the movie went on, the characters developed and learned to bond. They learned to appreciate the meaning of trusting a man’s soul rather than the color of their skin. They worked to overcome the racial issues and heal the conflict. I feel that the scene where, Julius had gone to visit Gerry in the hospital after his accident showed most development. Julius walked into the room, â€Å"Only kin’s allowed in here,† said the nurse. â€Å"Alice, are you blind? Don’t you see the family resemblance? That’s my brother. † Gerry indicated. This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting among ourselves today. This green field right here, painted red, bubblin with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. Yo u listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we dont come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I dont care if you like each other of not, but you will respect each other. And maybe I dont know, maybe well learn to play this game like men. † Coach Boone said to the team. This quote has the most significance to the theme. Coach Boone explained that coming together would be the only option and they had to learn to accept each other no matter what, that they are all equal. From my point of view, the themes are equality and acceptance. No matter what your race is, your gender is or the religion you follow you should not be treated different than any other human. Beneath the skin we are all the same, we all have a heart and that is what truly matters. â€Å"Everywhere we go -Everywhere we go-, people wanna know -people wanna know-, who we are -who we are-, so we tell them -so we tell them- We Are The Titans! -We Are The Titans! The Mighty Mighty Titans! -The Mighty Mighty Titans! † they sang as they came together as a team and brought the entire city of Alexandria together too. The movie taught me about unhealthy relationships and how they can become healthy ones. Also, the movie taught me about acceptance and equality.

Phoenix Jackson, an elderly Negro women who is frail, old and has many handicaps, she lived during trying times and because of her race, faced many challenges while growing up, Eudora Welty brings the story, â€Å"A Worn Path†, to life through the use of the character Phoenix Jackson and symbols.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  While overcoming challenges her character is born. The story is based on an elderly Negro women’s journey into town for medicine for her grandson. Along the way she encounters physical challenges, obstacles and danger. She climbs hills, crosses streams, crawls under barbed-wire fences; she faces dangers while out in the wilderness and a hunter who threatens her life with a gun. This happens on a single trip to town. These weekly journeys had become a virtual ritual. Vande Kieft states â€Å"Miss Eudora Welty often takes ritual action very seriously-especially the most simple and primitive rituals of home, or private rituals which comes from repeated performances of an action of love†, Old Phoenix’s down the worn Path. (70).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The conflicts were put in the story to show us the inner feelings of Phoenix. She was able to endure hardships and yet stays focused on the task at hand. This tells us while she was growing up she over came many obstacles. Kreyling says, â€Å"usually Welty reserved for her black characters the functions of this vital, sure and faithful, ways of living of which modern man has either lost or denied. Phoenix Jackson represents the condition of the human race before â€Å"enfeebling† layers of civilization anesthetized it. Although primitive, Phoenix is centered in and directed toward the value of life, the path worn by habit of hope. She possesses that vitality without which, faith would not be possible†. (24). 3 Using nothing more than details of an old Negro woman’s journey to city to get medicine for her grandson, but gives us a sense of human fortitude that is almost unbearable in its’ sad intensity. (Turner, Harding 262). Using symbols brings color and fullness to the character in the story. This sets the time, place and shows hardships that developed her character.

Alcoholism as the Plot Builder of Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and Damned Essay

To echo Fitzgerald’s postulation of Antony Patch’s messed up life, â€Å"†¦As winter approached it seemed that a sort of madness seized upon Anthony. He awoke in the morning so nervous that Gloria could feel him trembling in the bed before he could muster enough vitality to stumble into the pantry for a drink. He was intolerable now except under the influence of liquor, and as he seemed to decay and coarsen under her eyes, Gloria’s soul and body shrank away from him†¦CITATION Fit02 p 111 l 1033 (Fitzgerald, 2002, p. 111)† This is a depiction of a desperate man’s life that has turned to alcohol after experiencing multiple frustrations in life all through his adulthood and a wife who is drawn away from him for this reason. How Antony Patch’s character is molded and developed in the novel is just but a reflection of the messed lives of many uber-rich adults who were lucky enough to be born in rich families but ended up blowing up lifet ime opportunities in wasteful escapades of lavish spending during the excessive drinking and partying Jazz Era of the 1920s. Ideally, The Beautiful and Damned is about Anthony Patch who is married Gloria Gilbert and they are hypnotized with the party life. They lead an extravagant life where they enjoy throwing and attending parties which eventually develops to a habit of drinking o a daily basis. Such was the life of Anthony Patch who had mastered the art of laziness leading a valueless life only eager for his grandfather to pass on so as to inherit his multimillion fortunes .Patch’s drinking habits were picked while at school in Princeton where his initial life was tied around books but due to peer influence channeled through his schoolmates who thought of him as being dull and a hopeless romantic, he besought to drinking just like the rest of his peers and vowed to explore the world and party using his family fortune. At some point in life, Anthony Patch is enrolled into Camp Hooker during the war years but he proves to be mentally disoriented as he spends his days in the camp getting drunk and t o cap it all picked up a mistress. Though the move of enrolled into Camp Hooker is considered as a patriotic one, his friends at the camp are another worthless lot who gratify and support his drinking tendencies by indulging in the same with him. His drinking trysts make him a favorite among his camp buddies for he is treated respect for the incessant parties he throws while at camp thus putting to light contemptibility and stupidity of his friends CITATION Mau22 l 1033 (Maunsell, 1922). Patch then meets Gloria Gilbert who beauty is impeccable and he is quickly swept off is feet as he vows to pursue his romantic desires to his life’s death with Gloria. Gloria herself is a replica of Antony for her dogma is satisfaction of worldly pleasures as she selflessly puts it herself, â€Å"If I wanted anything, I’d take it†¦ I can’t be bothered resisting things I want†¦ (Fitzgerald, 2002, p. 235)† It is with the same creed that she detests her husband’s inability to continuously sustain her lavish and innumerable cocktails. Just like everyone else, this couple turns to alcoholism to camouflage their life frustrations to the extent that Anthony cannot do without a taste of the bottle described in Gloria’s own words, â€Å"Oh no, he doesn’t show it anymore unless he can hardly stand up, and  he talks alright till he gets excited. He talks much  better than he does when he’s sober. But he’s been sitting here all day drinking-except for the time it took him to walk the corner for a newspaper†¦ (Fitzgerald, 2002, p. 398)† This entry at towards the end of the novel shows how despicable and dependable Antony patch’s life has been on alcohol after missing out on his grandfather’s fortune and the same being directed towards a servant. Perhaps, Patch’s party and drinking habits were fueled by the fact that he was heir to a rich empire built by his rather strict disciplinarian grandfather who gave no room to unvalued morals. An event where he walks into one of Gloria and Antony’s raucous wild party at their apartment is a representation of his disgust and vilification for irresponsible behavior. His body language and events that transpire after this speaks volumes about his disciplinary antics; at the party, he stares at a white-faced Antony with disgust and in disbelief and utters five denouncing words to the young man in front of him, â€Å"†¦Well go back to Suttleworth..(Fitzgerald, 2002, p. 235)† The mood in the mood is all somber, both Gloria and Patch are frightened by Cross Patch’s presence but he silently walks out of the room after his works. Repercussions that follow are that gets disinherited of his grandfather’s fortune and it is directed towards a servant. They co ntest the decision after his grandfather’s passing but it only makes them more miserable as they entrenched deeper into alcoholism to drown their sorrows. The Damned and beautiful closes as tragic story of an individual who had it all but wasted the opportunity through lavish parties and alcoholism to end up in a wheel chair by age thirty three. This essay is concerned with my personal development and continued professional practice through the skills that have been enhanced this year. Firstly reflecting on my personal development, considering what my original expectations were and how it has changed. Whilst discussing self esteem and the experiences of over coming challenges whilst making friends and how that has impacted my learning. Secondly the focus on professional development, time management skills that have been improved as well as ICT and organizational skills. Furthermore considering, Bowlby (1973) attachment t heory and Bronfenbrenner (1979) bio-ecological system and there impact on Early Years development. Finally concluding with how the knowledge gained in this degree course has determined my personal pedagogy as well as my future plans. Prior to the commencement of this course I had preconceived ideas of what the work load would be, based on previous courses taken.
